What Exactly Is Scada?

in System
SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. This alone doesnt really tell you exactly what it does. SCADA systems are control systems which act as a dashboard, collecting information from numerous sources and collating the results. The bonus of using it when compared to certain other control systems is that a company or individual can monitor entire systems in real time.

The other benefit is that they will invariably include a Human Machine Interface. The monitoring process means that there is much less likeliness for anything to go wrong due to the extreme ease with which one can communicate with the systems. Due to this they will often be employed in certain high-risk environments such as nuclear power plants as well as in many other sectors of the energy industry.

SCADA systems are also hugely advantageous in terms of scope. They are as affective in close proximity, monitoring processes on a single site, as they are internationally being monitored remotely across continents.

The system is split up into numerous components. A database with search and store facility is integral, as is the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) which assimilates and classifies the collected information. There will also need to be some form of network to allow for the information to be distributed to the relevant points. The Human Machine Interface then allows for the staff member overseeing the operation to view the data that has been collected and remotely change, or suspend, conditions as needed.

These control systems are vital in many different aspects of industry for both safety and accuracy in a wide range of processes. Often it will be the quickest way to form conclusions, and they can evaluate and present data that is much more relevant to the user. In short, they are usually just the quickest and simplest way to monitor a whole range of processes from anywhere in the world.
